A matchbook is a small paperback folder (match cover) enclosing a quantity of matches. When taken off the folder, the match is used to strike a coarse surface on the outside (exterior). The exterior of the match cover is usually imprinted with a producer’s logo and often serves as an advertising/promotional medium. This became a cheap promotional item or souvenir. The first companies to use match books for advertising include Pabst beer, American Tobacco Company and Wrigley’s chewing gum. The popularity of disposable lighters created diminished demand for match books. This marked a new scarcity of match book related items.
